Wilderness Trail in the Kruger National Park, South Africa

On this tour we do what only a few have dreamed of doing – we explore the Kruger National Park on FOOT! As we camp in wilderness we are exposed to the natural world in a way you can only achieve by slowing down and following the rhythm of wild. We will interpret what we see and hear, following ancient game paths through the bush. You can be sure to learn about the secret ways of the wild, as highly qualified guides explain and teach us along the way.
While on trail we carry fully equipped backpacks (quality equipement, packed and ready on arrival, approx. 15 kgs), which contain everything you will need during the 4 days in the wild. There are no fixed camps, nor fixed route, so prepared for a real safari experience like back in the day.

After spending 4 days in the bush we stay at a luxury lodge (also in the middle of the African bush) for a bit of pampering. Cold drinks, delicious meals and comfortable rooms ensure a perfect ending to your African wilderness experience.

Itinerary

You will be picked up at Hoedspruit airport, where you will be met by your guide, who will accompany you the next week. We drive directly into the famous Kruger National Park. Your African wildlife experience begins straight away, as we make our way through the park. The gamedrive will give you a taste of what to expect, while walking on foot in the park. We often see elephants, buffalos, giraffes as well as all the plains game like zebra, impala, wildebeests and many many more. With a bit of luck we might also see some of the big cats, like lions, leopards or cheetahs.
In the afternoon we will arrive at one of the Kruger camps, where we will spend the night before starting the real adventure tomorrow.

Accommodation: Kruger accommodation
Meals: Lunch and Dinner in Kruger National Park
Hike: None

The sound of the bush — maybe hippos grunting outside the huts, lions roaring or birds singing — wake us up to a relaxing morning, where we begin the day with brunch on the deck overlooking the African bush.
Before we leave the comforts of civilisation we will have a safety briefing and check  all of our equipment (Supplied and packed by Dust and Boots, approx. 15 kg). We are leaving civilisation for 4 days and will have to be prepared. We will be accompanied by two professional and armed rangers, who will be in charge of trails, camps, and safety for the duration of the wilderness trail. These individuals are highly qualified and knowledgeable; They will ensure that we make the most of the experience on foot in the African bush.
Lunch usually consists of snacks on the first day, while dinner is prepared on individual gas stoves in our rudimentary camp. We sleep in two-man tents in a beautiful spot that we have to share with the resident wildlife. Everyone participates in setting up camp, fetching firewood and water.

Accommodation: two-man tents in the middle of the African bush (no camp facilities available)
Meals: Brunch before departure, lunch and dinner prepared on gas stoves in the bush.
Hike: There is no fixed route as such. The two rangers are in charge of our experience and they will find interesting trails and sites along the way, as well as point out tracks and signs of the wild. The hike rarely exceeds 12 km per day.

We wake up with the sun, and have coffee or tea, as well as breakfast at our leasure. Sometimes the rangers take us to a special breakfast spot after a short walk in the morning (usually with a breathtaking view).
We pack up camp and make sure that we do not leave anything behind. With the backpack comfortably secured on our backs we make our way deeper into the African bush, perhaps following fresh rhino or lion tracks or game paths made by the repeated use of animals over time.
At some point we will need to have our water containers refilled. This is done by natural springs or directly from the rivers. The water is filtered and purified before it is suitable for consumption and we all help with the process.
By afternoon the rangers will have appointed a new spot to set up camp; chats around the fire as well as dinner awaits.

Accommodation: two-man tents in the middle of the African bush (no camp facilities available)
Meals: All meals individually prepared in the bush

During the last few days we have learned about the ways of wild, and now start to recognise its many signs of life. The rangers keenly point out tracks, sounds, and smells, as well as the wildlife around us. Sometimes we are lucky and see lots of animals, but it really depend on the circumstances; if we are silent and blend in there is a good chance of seeing animals. If we are loud and stand out — we will not see any. The rangers are masters of game spotting and will often see animals long before they see us, which allow us to sneak in closer and view them without disturbing them. A true privilege.

We clear camp one last time, and have all started to look forward to a nice hot bath, as well as a cold drink in a comfortable setting.
Hopefully you will now be fully relaxed and have enjoyed the digital detox (no cellphones, emails or beeping alarms), before we return to the modern world. Luckily we ease back into it, as we will spend the next couple of days being pampered in the bush — a stark contrast to the wilderness trails we have just completed.
A gamedrive through the Kruger National Park will take us to the lodge we will be staying at for the next two days.

Accommodation: Luxury lodge in the private part of the Kruger National Park
Meals: Breakfast in the bush, lunch in Kruger and dinner at the lodge
Hike: The length of the hike will vary on this day, as it is up to the rangers to determine if we should walk far or only a short distance.

Today we get to enjoy all the comforts of the more traditional South African Safari. Delicious food, comfortable surroundings and game drives in open vehicles.
If you haven’t had enough of walking in the African bush, we can join the local guides on a morning bushwalk. Or maybe you prefer to sleep in and enjoy a relaxing morning in comfort? It’s entirely up to you.
We will go on a gamedrive in the afternoon, and enjoy sundowners in a pretty spot in the bush.

Accommodation: Luxury lodge based in the private part of the Kruger National Park.
Meals: All meals at the lodge
Hike: Optional morning bushwalk (included) with the lodge rangers.

After a beautiful brunch on the deck overlooking the African bush, we head to the airport. With our pockets filled to the brim with memories of an unforgettable trip we say our goodbyes and see you agains and head home.
