The Whale Trail — A walk in the Park

Hiking and whales are perhaps not the first thing that comes to mind, when thinking of your next adventure in Southern Africa, but it is non-the-less an experience you should not be without. As with all other wildlife encounters,  we cannot guarantee that you will see whales on this hike. However, the chances are relatively good, as the whales congregate in large numbers to breed in the southern African seas this time of year. More than 100 individuals have been observed in the same area during this period, so of source we hope to spot a few of them.

Should we not see the whales, the hike itself is worth the trip. The area and the trails we follow are diverse and vary greatly from day to day with different natural experiences along the way making it an interesting and very enjoyable hike.

Read more about the trail under the individual days in the itinerary below.

Itinerary

You will be met by your guide at George airport in South Africa (an easy connection flight from Johannesburg). From here we drive to the lovely coastal nature reserve of DeHoop, where we will spend the next week.
On our way to DeHoop we take a slight detour and experience some river crossing ingenuity. Our vehicle will be drawn across the river by man power — we all help in the endeavour.
During the afternoon we arrive at DeHoop, where we need to pack the belongings we are taking with us on the hike. Each of you will receive a 60L box, where you can pack clothes and personal items — these will be transported from place to place by vehicle, while we hike. We recommend that you leave tablets, phones, and laptops at home, so that you can enjoy the raw nature and surroundings during the hike without being distracted by the beeping and buzzing of modern life , but it is up to you of course.

Accommodation: Nice lodge in DeHoop Nature Reserve
Meals: Lunch en route, Dinner at the lodge
Hike: None

We set out to conquer the trails and begin by ascending Potberg, the local summit of 611 meters above sea level. Views of Swellendam and Cape Agulhas (The most southern point of Africa) are visible on a clear day. The rare and majestic Cape vultures are often spotted on this part of the route, so we will keep an eye on the sky as well as the trails ahead. We continue over Potberg and onwards to Cupidoskraal, where a swim in a small dam is possible.
Our dinner is cooked, while we relax with a cold drink after the long hike.

Accommodation: Hut with 3 bedrooms (dorm style with bunk beds)
Meals: Breakfast at the lodge, packed lunch on the trail, dinner at the hut
Hike: 14,7 kilometers (fixed route), ascent to Potberg is tough, but doable. Beautiful terrain in the fynbos (low vegetation form of the Cape).

We will enjoy breakfast in the hut, before we set out towards to the coast. The trail will take us over the ridge of Potberg through mountain fynbos, the special low vegetation type characterizing the Cape. The low vegetation allows us to enjoy the splendid views unhindered. As we arrive at the sea dramatic views of the coastline form the backdrop for the lovely hut, Noetsie, a favorite place for many. After arrival we enjoy the panoramic views over the Indian Ocean, while we are spoilt with food and drinks. There are shallow waters nearby, which can be explored at leisure in the afternoon.

Accommodation: Hut with 3 bedrooms (dorm style with bunk beds)
Meals: Breakfast before departure, packed lunch on the trail, dinner at the hut
Hike: 15 kilometers (fixed route), We arrive at the coast with grand views over the Indian Ocean.

The day’s trail allow for a lazy morning and a late-ish departure and many stops along the trail. We are going to explore the coastline with some detours along the way. A detour to Stilgat offers snorkeling options and swimming in natural pools filled by the seawater. (snorkeling equipment will be made available, but you will have to carry it in your day pack). Today is also the day where the whale watching/spotting really starts; As we walk along the shoreline — raised above the beach in most places — we have a great vantage point.
Just before reaching Hamerkop we walk in the sand on the beach — this is a long slog and tough on the calves, but as always a cold drink as well as a hearty meal awaits upon arrival at the hut. The hut is a lovely old thatched roofed cottage on the beach.

Accommodation: Hut with 3 bedrooms (dorm style with bunk beds)
Meals: Breakfast before departure, packed lunch on the trail, dinner at the hut
Hike: 8,5 kilometers (fixed route), We walk along the coast the whole day.

Once again we walk along the beach — shoes are repeatedly taken off and put back on again, as we walk in and out of the thick sand. We have plenty of time to enjoy the trail again today, so we can enjoy the incredible nature surrounding us. On this part of the trail we often see many specialized bird species that are rare most other places. They inhabit the variety of different habitats along the coast.
We make sure we take the time to take out the binoculars to look for the giants of the sea — Whales. Sometimes they are easily visible, when they throw themselves out of the water, other times you only see a fin, the tail or part of the back. You will be expert whale spotters by the end of this trail.
Another delicious meal awaits us, when we arrive at Vaalkrans — a stunning hut placed above the splashing coastline below.

Accommodation: Hut with 3 bedrooms (dorm style with bunk beds)
Meals: Breakfast before departure, packed lunch on the trail, dinner at the hut
Hike: 10,5 kilometers (fixed route), We walk along the coast with grand views over the Indian Ocean

The last day on the trail is relatively short, so we make sure to stop often and make the most of the stunning walk along the coast. Whales and dolphins are often spotted on this part of the trail, so we make an effort to keep a look out, as we walk. There is plenty of time to explore the natural pools, swimming and snorkeling as we do so.
Upon arrival at Koppie Alleen we will be picked up and driven to a nice lodge in DeHoop, where comfort and pampering awaits.

Accommodation: Really nice double rooms with views of the local vlei (wildlife often roam these parts)
Meals: Breakfast before departure, packed lunch on the trail, dinner at the lodge
Hike: 7 kilometers (fixed route) — The last day on trail, we continue walking along the coast.

Today we relax and enjoy being pampered a bit, as we visit the lodge spa. A massage of your choice is included in today’s activities; maybe a good back rub or perhaps a needed leg massage, it’s up to you.
The rest of the day is open for suggestions — perhaps a trip to the sea or a walk around the vlei near the lodge or just a rest with a great book. There is lots of wildlife in the area surrounding the lodge — we often see the grand eland, bontebok, ostrich and many more iconic animals of the Cape.

Accommodation: Really nice double rooms with views of the local vlei (wildlife often roam these parts)
Meals: All meals at the lodge
Hike: Optional walk around the lodge or along the beach

After a great day of rest yesterday, we are ready to head out after lovely breakfast at the lodge. We drive straight back to George airport and say our goodbyes.

the Whale Trail (blog post)

The thought of whales and hiking in one trip was too tempting to resist, so I started my car and drove the 1500 kilometres along the coast the small but hugely impressive nature reserve of De Hoop.
